Making a Greener World with Perlite
By Adapting New Technologies for an Environmental Friendly Perlite
By Adapting New Technologies for an Environmental Friendly Perlite
Perlco is an Australian company with a large perlite resource near Chillagoe about 200 km west of the port of Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Perlco is using new technologies for the production of zero emission perlite for construction, agriculture, filtration and cosmetics. We are committed to promoting environmental sustainability and protecting the planet through our various programs and initiatives.
A SUMMARY OF MAJOR MINERAL RESOURCES, MINES AND PROJECTS by the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy estimated the perlite resource at the Nychum deposit may contain up to 700 million tonnes. The perlite outcrops within a 6.5km X 3.0km area and is up to 30 meters deep. The perlite resources at Nychum probably represents Australia’s largest perlite resource and Perlco’s mining tenements cover a significant part of this large resource.
Perlite is a volcanic glass, which forms when molten lava rapidly cools without sufficient time for crystal growth. This rapid cooling prevents the minerals in the lava from arranging into a crystalline structure, resulting in an amorphous, glassy material known as volcanic glass "PERLITE" which contains up to 10% water.
Step 1 : The perlite is crushed to about the size of sand and heated to reduce the water content to 3%.
Step 2 : Then the glass is heated rapidly in an expansion furnace to produce an expanded lightweight bead called “perlite”.
According to Facts and Factors*, the Global Expanded Perlite Market size was valued at around US$ 1,392.40 Million in 2021 and is estimated to grow about US$2,031.70 Million by 2028, at a CAGR of approximately 6.50% between 2022 and 2028.

Perlco is currently investigating new process technologies including infrared drying, furnace design and using solar power to replace conventional gas heating.
A new thermal process is being developed to manufacture an expanded glass material for the production of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) seen on the photo above. This eco-friendly low cost process successfully used expanded pitchstone for high-end nanotechnology applications.
OTHER PROGRAMS INCLUDE:
Perlco has been conducting long-term testwork on perlite replacing cement in concrete and research into perlite in nanotechnology
The natural material perlite is an compelling replacement for plastics microbeads in personal care products, such as some exfoliating scrubs, cosmetics, toothpaste and shower gels.
Perlite is:
Tiny plastic particles microplastics are added to some exfoliating skincare gels. From there, they get into the environment and may enter our bodies.
FNQ focus with a regional manufacturing hub to be developed in the Townsville/ Cairns region producing perlite for construction, insulation, filtration & agriculture
Perlite microspheres help to reduce microplastic pollution in the oceans
At Perlco , we believe that renewable energy is the future. Our clean energy programme promotes the use of solar and wind power, and supports the development of sustainable energy infrastructure.
